$15 Of these it may be said that the clubs included are the best social club in Hongkong, a good golf club and the best cricket olub. The best golf can be obtained only at the end of an expensive journey by rail or car. The combined entrance fees amount to about $150. Other clubs, such as the yacht club and the polo club, are cheap of their kind, but must be regarded as expensive luxuries.

No estimate is made above for sundry expenses and amusements; wine and tobacco; entertainment; books and periodicals; insurance, holidays spent outside the Colony; or clothing.

Winter clothing should be obtained from home and should be such as could be worn on a mild winter day at home. Many people feel the cold of a Hongkong winter almost as much as at home. Summer clothing should be obtained here:

it is fairly cheap. But very light flannels and flannel suite might well be obtained at home. Leather boots should

be bought at home; but not canvas (summer) shoes. Books and

periodicals should also be obtained from home. Many masters take a trip to Japan in the summer holidays. It is a

pleasant change, although by no means a necessity; the cost

may be put at $600. On the whole it may be said that en

unmarried master on such a three years' agreement can save

money if he wishes to do so, and still live on a scale which would probably content him et home. On the other hand he can here, without getting into debt, indulge in more expensive

amusements.

The position of a married master is very different
